Grandios.
Every year, as an whisky enthusiast, you are faced with the question: wich whisky will be my Christmas-highlight this year. My decision this year was an „old“ fellow from my year-of-birth 1965.
„Probably Speyside’s Finest Distillery“ (Glenfarclas), distilled in October 1965 and bottled at the age of 43 years in December 2008. From the Sherry Butt (DL REF 3816) 583 bottles were filled with 50 % alc. vol., no added color and without chill filtration.
This exceptional whisky shimmers clear and chestnut-colored in the tasting glass. Its oily texture is visible through the streaks on the glass. It’s nose is dominated by citric aromas (orange peel), it smells almost ethereal, spicy (ginger, cinnamon), followed by distinct sherry note with hinds of cedar and sandalwood, leather, rubber, chocolate and gingerbread.
On the palate, the whisky is round, oily, almost creamy with a complex and harmonious variety that is not as strongly dominated by citrus as I expected after nosing. A light sweetness, combined with a distinct sherry aroma, spicy ginger note, chocolate, gingerbread and a hind of leather and cinnamon, increases to a brilliant finish. Warm, intense, spicy and long-lasting. Terrific.
